About
Hosts and microbes form long-term symbiotic interactions that shape their biology at multiple levels, from physiology to ecology and evolution. This is a growing field of research which impacts many other areas, from environmental sciences to human health.
The "SymbNET International Conference on Host-Microbe Symbiosis" will bring together researchers working on a diverse range of questions, approaches, and model systems. The meeting will cover different host systems such as plants, animals and humans and different molecular mechanisms, functional understanding and ecological models of the interactions. The purpose is to highlight the most recent advances in the field, common principles between systems, and future directions to explore.
This meeting is organized in the context of the EU twinning grant SymbNET with specific sessions organised by NCCR Microbiomes and CRC Metaorganisms. It will host 200 participants, with all sessions being plenary.
The conference will be held at Real Marina - Hotel @ Spa, Olhão in the city of Olhão, by the Ria Formosa lagoon in Algarve, south of Portugal.

Registration
Register here until March, 27th (extended deadline).
During registration, applicants will have to submit an Abstract and select in which session they want to present.
Applicants should indicate if they want to be considered for an oral presentation. We will select 50% of talks from abstracts submitted by PhD students and postdocs.
Abstracts are to be written in English and following the provided WORD template: ABSTRACT template.
Participants should bring a Poster with portrait format and A0 size (~84 × 119 cm).
Fee and Sponsoring
Selected applicants will have to pay a registration fee of 650 EUR, which includes:
- Conference attendance
- 3 Lunches (11, 12, 13 Jun)
- Coffee breaks
- 2 Dinners (11, 13 Jun)
- Social activity (to be anounced)
- Accommodation in a double room*
* Single rooms (with private bathroom) in double room apartments are subject to availability and an extra registration fee of 100 EUR. These apartments are located across the street of the hotel, but participants will have access to all the hotel services.
There is a limited number of sponsored places for members of SymbNET partner institutes, with travel and registration costs covered (FCG-IGC, ITQB NOVA, EMBL, CAU, and UNIL). Please indicate in the registration form if you want to be considered for it. If you are selected you will also participate in the SymbNET Final Meeting, 13-14 June 2024, at the same venue.
We are committed to admitting participants from diverse scientific and cultural backgrounds. We strongly encourage applicants from widening countries in Horizon2020 or Horizon Europe, as well as from other countries with low performance in Research and Innovation, namely from Africa, Asia, South and Central America. We will sponsor the participation of applicants from these countries by waiving the registration fee to a limited number of candidates, until the 15th of March 2024.
