Scientific Communication Roundtable

Meet science communicators and learn about their approach to engage different audiences to promote science communication:

Isa Mota (@FalameNeuro):

“Fala-me Neuro” (“Talk Neuro to Me” in English) is an all-Portuguese neuroscience communication project developed to address the growing need of the Portuguese population for reliable and accessible neuroscience-related information. Founded in 2021 by Rui Rodrigues (@ruisilrodrigues), this project brings neuroscientists closer to the public by encouraging the debate of current and controversial brain and mind topics within local Portuguese communities. Currently, we're a team of 20 enthusiastic researchers, science communicators, and healthcare professionals focused on the organization of local in-person sessions and the dissemination of digital content to raise awareness about brain function in health and disease. Our mission is to democratize neuroscience literacy to all ages and societal groups, foster curiosity, and fight misinformation by promoting the discussion of recent advances in brain research.

Dr. Nuno Negrões (@NativeScientis1):

Native Scientist was founded by two researchers in 2013 with the goal of connecting scientists and children across Europe to reduce inequalities, promote quality education and celebrate diversity. Today, Native Scientist counts on a network of over 3,000 scientists and their educational programmes have established over 20,000 connections between scientists and children, particularly underserved children. Nuno Negroes is part of Native Scientist team and RAISE project lead. Nuno has worked in Wildlife Conservation and Outreach for more than 20 years in different countries (Portugal, Brazil, Bolívia and Mozambique) and also has a postdoc in Science Communication. He likes to immerse himself in different cultures and ways of thinking. He loves going for walks with his family, going to the movies, reading books, and anything with water. He dreams of one day making a documentary that will inspire people.

Dr. Maria Serrano (@mserranocorreia):

Maria Serrano is an engineer turned into scientist who really enjoys the meadows of communication and education.
Currently at NOVA Medical School-UNL, Maria is responsible for the communication of the science procuced at the Medical School. Maria Serrano is accountable for institutional communication, social media presence, and public engagement and outreach activities for different target audiences.
She conducted her graduate research between Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and Imperial College London, and obtained her PhD on Biomedicine from NOVA Medical School in 2014. Before, Maria Serrano did her formal training as a researcher at Novartis, Switzerland, on biotechnology, and worked at SPI USA, at Baltimore, USA, a consulting company in Life Sciences and Innovation, as consultant and science manager. M.Serrano has also teaching experience in the area of science communication and cellular and molecular biology at NMS and ENSP - Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Dr. Ricardo Vilela (@podcastcomrazao):

Podcast Com Razão (PCR) is a science communication podcast that features casual conversations between 3 PhD students with researchers from portuguese institutions. The podcast aims to showcase the research happening in Portugal, but also tries to show the people behind the Science: their background, their motivations, experiences and even their point-of-views on several topics.
Filipe Sousa, José Rodrigues and Ricardo Vilela met at ITQB NOVA during their PhDs and created the PCR podcast to communicate Science in a casual manner by having conversations with interesting scientists doing interesting Science in Portugal, hopefully inspiring the next generation of scientists.
